Inexistence prototype
A downloadable game
This is mostly just a prototype of a concept I've been playing around with. There's more I would've wanted to put into this, but I kind of want to make sure the idea actually works first, so I scraped together the most bare bones representation of this project into these testing rooms.
The concept
There are a few signs in this prototype that probably explain the idea better than I can here, but the idea is that you have an "existant" state, where being in the world drains a meter, but you're free to interact with the world, and a "non-existant" state, where you're under no time limit and undetectable, but have a limited interaction with the world (in it's current state)
You may be wondering why I didn't go at this from the other way around, with the inexistance on a timer and being able to freely be in the world with no limits. Wouldn't that have been significantly easier?
The thing about that is that I actually DID try that for a good while, and while there were a few things that this allowed for that the current approach doesn't (as well as, yes, being easier to work with), it ended up feeling too much like a stealth game, which wasn't my goal.
The second is that, stealth game aside, it just didn't feel nearly as interesting from both a gameplay and a, potentially, narrative standpoint.
This may leave you with the follow up question of: "Doesn't putting existence on a timer make it MORE like a stealth game?"
The answer to THAT is kind of what I'm trying to figure out. My theory is that, if I can balance this in the right way, I can create gameplay that weaves between aggression and planning/positioning without ending up feeling campy
That said, ANY feedback, good or bad, would be a massive help. Doesn't matter if you think you'll hurt my feelings.
Controls
Move-WASD/Left stick
Camera-Mouse/Right stick
Attack-Left click/Right button (whatever that happens to be)
Jump-Space/Bottom button
Shift existence state-E/Top button
Give Health -> Existence-F/Left bumper
Give Existence -> Health-G/Right bumper
Pause-ESC/Pause
Reset-R/Left button
Known bugs
-It's possible to get stuck in the attack animation if you input on the very last possible frame
-Landing from a jump on stairs and certain slopes in certain ways causes the animations to get a little bit messed up,
